Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University drives pageviews with Cloudflare performance.
Founded in 2006, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is the largest international joint venture university in China, a partnership between Xi'an Jiaotong University and the University of Liverpool. The university’s vision is to become a research-led international university in China and a Chinese university recognised internationally for its unique features in learning and teaching, research, social service, and education management.
Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University’s Challenge: Performance for International Education
With the goal of becoming an international university XJTLU needed to ensure that their website was high performing and available for users anywhere in the world. However, with infrastructure focussed on campus, access to XJTLU’s site was intermittent and slow for off campus users. This poor performance was magnified for international users trying to access the site from distant geographies. “We knew that this could be addressed through using a CDN provider,” explained Scott Mallinson, Web Development Manager, “but we wanted an easy-to-use solution that would improve experience for both off-campus users in China as well as our international users.”
Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University’s Solution: A Global Performance and Security Network
XJTLU considered a number of CDN providers, but chose Cloudflare because it offered a single pane for controlling global traffic. “Cloudflare was the only solution that provided a unified experience for setting up and managing a CDN that has nodes both within China and internationally,” Mallinson commented. Through Cloudflare’s partnership with Baidu, Cloudflare is able to offer a truly global Content Delivery Network, improving the performance of XJTLU’s site for users both around China and the globe with over 151 spanning the world including 22 unique locations across China. These data centers cache and serve XJTLU’s content to the closest users to them, dramatically reducing geographic latency and reducing XJTLU’s bandwidth costs. Plus, each of Cloudflare’s data centers performs all of Cloudflare’s security services protecting XJTLU and further reducing infrastructure costs.
“Today, we use Cloudflare to provide a more robust, secure and faster experience for our global users,” Mallinson continued. “By using customized page rules and the Web Application Firewall, we’re able further reduce load on our servers, while better protecting our site. This brings me and my team a heightened level of reassurance that the website is stable, secure, and importantly, high performing— which means a better experience for our end users.”
